About Dr. Janda
Dr. Janda is an orthopedic surgeon in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the founder and Director of the Institute For Preventive Sports Medicine, a non-profit research organization dedicated to the prevention of sports-related injuries and health care cost containment. The Institute has gained a world-wide reputation as the only organization that focuses solely on the prevention of sports injuries, particularly to children.
Through the Institute, Dr. Janda has conducted groundbreaking research on such subjects as the use of breakaway bases in reducing sliding injuries in baseball, the role of soft-core baseballs in reducing chest impact injuries in youth baseball, reducing injuries from collisions with soccer goal, and the effect of heading on cognitive function in youth soccer players. For his work, Dr. Janda has received awards from the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Janda serves or has served on numerous boards, including the Board of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and the National Institute of Health Trauma Research Task Force. He was appointed by Michigan governor John Engler to the Governor's Council on Health, Fitness and Sports, and is immediate past Chairman of the Prevention of Sports Injuries Advisory Group for the State of Michigan.
A frequent lecturer to the lay and medical communities on injury prevention, Dr. Janda has also testified before Congress, contributed to or been the lead author of a number of peer-reviewed medical journal articles,
and the subject of numerous magazine and newspaper articles. His recent, critically acclaimed book,
The Awakening Of A Surgeon, chronicles his efforts in the field of preventative sports medicine.
A magna cum laude graduate from Bucknell University with B.A. degrees in Chemistry and Economics, Dr. Janda obtained his M.D. degree from Northwestern University Medical School. He did his Orthopedic
Surgery Residency at the University of Michigan, and then completed a fellowship in shoulder reconstructive surgery and sports medicine in London, Ontario, Canada.
