List of Single Serving Under USDA's Food Guidance System

Here are some examples of what counts as single serving in the major food groups in the USDA Food Guidance System

Bread, Cereal, Rice, And Pasta Group
  • 1 slice of bread
  • 1/2 bun or bagel
  • 1 ounce of ready-to-eat cereal
  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of cooked cereal
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice or pasta
Vegetable Group
  • 1/2 cup chopped raw or cooked vegetables
  • 1 cup of leafy raw vegetables
  • 1/2 cup of canned vegetables
  • 1/2 cup tomato or vegetable juice
Fruit Group
  • 1 piece of fresh fruit or melon wedge
  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) of cooked or canned fruit
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of fruit juice
  • 1/4 cup dried fruit
Milk Group
  • 1 cup (8 ounces) of milk or yogurt
  • 1 1/2 ounces of natural cheese
  • 2 ounces of processed cheese
Meat Group
  • 2 1/2 to 3 ounces of cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish
  • 1/2 cup cooked dry beans or 1 egg (equals 1 ounce of meat)
  • 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (equals 1 ounce of meat)

 

Note: The amount your child eats may be more than one serving. For instance, a dinner portion of spaghetti may count as 2 or 3 servings.
