The American Society For Testing And Materials (ASTM) has established a
new task force to establish voluntary safety standards for pole
vaulting. The task force is studying poles, which are made of highly
breakable fiberglass, and will be recommending an increase in the size
of the vaulting pit as a result of a study showing that 32 of 34 pole
vaulting accidents examined could have been prevented had larger pits
