SmartTeams Talk: Uncle Says Nephew's Death Playing High School Football Was Game-Changer
As tragic as was the 2001 death of his 17-year-old nephew Matthew from Second Impact Syndrome in a high school football game, says Deron Colby, it was a game-changer: not only did it inspire MomsTEAM's Brooke de Lench to launch a pioneering youth sports concussion center and to dedicate her PBS documentary, "The Smartest Team", to Matthew, but it eventually led to the creation of SmartTeams, a program to educate youth sports parents, coaches, athletic trainers, and administrators about best health and safety practices to minimize such needless tragedies in the future.
