Teaching Life Lessons As a Coach: Be Careful What You Teach

There seems to be a phrase that every coach has embraced of late which I think needs a closer look, and it is "teaching life lessons." It's phrase you have probably heard a lot lately, so much so that it seems to have taken on a life of its own, particularly in the context of middle and high school sports.

"Teaching life lessons" seems to be a phrase that every coach has embraced of late, so much so that it seems to
have taken on a life of its own, particularly in the context of middle
and high school sports. But the life lessons a coach teaches can be negative or positive. It's up to the coach.

Why Loyalty Is Bad For Youth Sports And Society

Everybody uses the word loyalty and some seem to embrace the phrase as if it had some parallel to ethics and I believe the word should be given some reconsideration by all. After being involved with many different youth athletic programs for the past several years, I have had the opportunity to observe youth leagues that are on opposite poles of the economic and social spectrum. I have coached in the wealthiest of suburban youth leagues and I've coached in inner city leagues that were in the most plighted areas where driving to and from practices made me very nervous.

Starting a New Youth Sports Club

As with team sports, success in starting a new youth sports program takes teamwork, determination and a willingness to do one's best to reach a common goal.

LL President: The Pros and Why I Said "Yes!"

It's mid-July and I have been at a ballpark just about every night for the last few weeks. I have watched 9-10 year-old baseball and softball, Little League Majors (11-12 year-olds) All-Stars and Honors teams, 13-14 year-old baseball on 80 foot and 90 foot diamonds, a college exposure fastpitch softball tournament, and joined my dad for an evening of USA Softball vs. Portland All-Stars on their pre-Olympic "Bound for Beijing" tour.

LL President: Take It or Leave, Part II

Most of my major life decisions have been made in a car on a road trip, probably driving north or south on I-5 between California and Oregon. I do my best thinking, and my husband and I do our best visiting in the car. As I think about taking on the position of President in our local Little League, this would be a perfect time for a road trip. I probably wouldn't need a 12-hour trip from Portland to San Francisco, maybe just a 3-hour trip to Seattle. We could watch a Mariners game, since we live in a city with NO MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM (can you tell that's a sore spot for us? :)

Little League President: Take It or Leave It?

My son is two years past the traditional Little League age...he will start his freshman year of high school in two months and he seems light years away from being a 12 year-old playing baseball on the 60 foot diamond. However, I feel drawn to the local ballfields even when it is not our son's team playing. In fact, I'm not picky about whether it is baseball or softball. I love to pull over and take in a few minutes of any game I see going on from the road.
